I wanted to share with everyone what happened with my children and niece today at their grandmother’s house. My mother-in-law who is in her mid 70′s heard the girls laughing in the bedroom. When she went to check on them, my niece was naked and ran under the bed, my daughter Katie was naked with her mouth opened, and my other daughter, Maria, was fully dressed holding cards in her hands. They had told their grandmother they were playing strip poker. My niece had informed her grandmother that she saw this game on Youtube.
Needless to say, my mother-in-law informed the girls that if she saw them doing this again they would get spanked with a wooden spoon. However, when I called her this afternoon, to check on the kids she was laughing about it. In addition, the girls were so upset that their parents were going to find out. The kids tried to plead with their grandmother not to say anything to their parents, however, grandma made no promises. So this afternoon, I got a phone call from Katie stating what they did and she was ready to accept any punishment we wanted to give them. My response to her was that your grandmother handled the situation perfectly and no more was going to be said. My sister-in-law also called me mortified that her daughter was showing my kids how to play strip poker. I just laughed and said we are family and that I am not to concerned and I thought her mother handled the situation very well.
Both my mother-in-law and I did discuss with the girls how inappropriate their game was and that they should not be showing their body parts to anyone except parents and their doctor if necessary.
Oh my. I can’t imagine that one. YIKES.
This makes me laugh out loud! My cousin and I were notorious for getting into mischief during our summers. This sounds just like something we would have done. I’m glad you were able to laugh about it.
I think the girls were curious and were experimenting and at least they were smart enough to do it at home in that setting and not get themselves into trouble at a friends house.
And to think….we started with Spin the Bottle…boy was that tame!
Oh Sue, I can’t help but think this is funny. They were all girls and are related so I’m glad you didn’t come down to hard on them. Between me and you, I’m smiling.
We used to play strip poker when I was a kid! But everyone totally cheated. I used to go put on about 10 layers of clothes first. The game always ended long before anyone was “nekkid.”
You have to admit, it does create an incentive for paying attention to the game!
My parents never found out about our strip poker games, but we did get caught once “streaking.” I remember how humiliated I was to have my babysitter and parents find out. Where do kids get these crazy ideas? In my case, from an older neighbor who knew too much for her own good.
I have to give the girls credit for feeling comfortable enough to play such a game with other girls they know and obviously trust. I think, as adults, we sometimes teach kids to hide their bodies which then leads to self image and confidence issues in the future. Now I am in no way promoting kids playing strip poker or putting their bodies out there for anyone to see, but what the girls did yesterday was perfectly innocent. If nothing else, it had to make for interesting conversation between the adults involved!

These girls were very embarrassed. Their grandfather did not take it so well and they were afraid that he did not love them anymore. However, they were quickly reassured that was not the case.
I also had a discussion with the girls on how they need to be careful about showing their private body parts. I basically emphazied that it is ok to show private body parts to parents and doctor if needed. By 6:00pm it was forgotten and the girls were back to playing outside on the trampoline. However, my husband, had to add a comment about wanting us all to play poker last night. They were embarrased with his suggestion, however, they moved on to other things.
